We have partnered with respected international institutions to offer Professional Development in Special Educational Needs. Our courses and workshops cater for all levels of education and experience, and we offer a broad range of specialised qualifications and topical workshops.

Training Courses

University of Wolverhampton Certificate: Foundation Course in Special Education

The Level 1 Special Education Training course is run by trained VIE Staff and supported and accredited by University of Wolverhampton. Together we have produced this unique SEN course which is designed for staff who are working in educare settings in Thailand.

You need to be in a school setting and have access to working/supporting a child with SEN. Each applicant must be supported by a manager or another senior professional who knows their work well and who is prepared to act as a ‘mentor’ and spend time supporting you with your practice.

On successful completion of the course the nominating manager will be required to supply you with a written statement of competency related to your skills and experience and this statement must be included in the Professional Skills Portfolio which will be submitted as the final assessment of the course.

The duration of the Level 1 training will be 18 – 20 weeks training (comprising work-based learning in the setting they are employed in) and 3 x half days per unit theoretical input to support the study materials provided in each of the 6 units.

A blended learning, face to face workshops and online course is the ideal way to gain a qualification in Special Educational Needs (SEN). Whether you’re looking to go on to further education, improve your job prospects or expand your knowledge, distance learning Special Educational Needs is a flexible and convenient course, which allows you to comprehensively prepare yourself to support children with special needs. What’s more, because the course is blended learning Special Educational Needs it is a fully comprehensive course and no prior knowledge is required.

This course is divided into six units, each of which deals with one or more learning outcomes related to one or more aspects of working with children who have specific needs and requirements. Once you have completed the entire course you will have achieved all the learning outcomes.

The course will be assessed by production of a Professional Skills Portfolio showing evidence of engagement with the tasks & activities in each of the six units and which must include a statement of professional competency from each of the facilitators leading the units (based on discussions / activities in the training centre) and a statement of professional competency from the workplace manager (confirming the participant’s ability to relate theory to practice). Successful completion of the training will result in a University of Wolverhampton completion certificate as L1 in Special Education.

Masters Program

In partnership with Northampton University (UK), VIE runs a Masters program (MA SEN and Inclusion) and SENCo Award. Northampton University are the leaders in SEN education, research and provision in the UK.

This is for Professionals who have experience of working with children, young people and adults with a range of special educational needs and/or disabilities. The tutors are nationally and internationally renowned for their research and experience in SEND and promoting inclusive practice.

How do you study?

A key strength of our programme is our blended learning approach. This provides the opportunity to learn collaboratively both face to face and online. Our integrated learning environment provides access to course materials and to a well-resourced library enabling students to access e books and electronic journals from home. Assessment procedures are flexible and sensitive to either personal interests or existing professional workloads. Assignments are usually based on aspects of work currently on going in our participants’ own professional context. There are no exams.

Entry Qualifications

Graduates with a honour degree or UK Level 6 equivalent International students must present evidence of having IELTS with a minimum score of 6.5, assessed through writing and interview.

Do you want to achieve a recognised award as a Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo)? Then this is the course for you.

Completion of the course has been mandatory for the teacher designated as the SENCo in the UK since 2009. SENCOs who have English QTS and gain this qualification providing they can demonstrate they meet the National College for Teaching and Leadership SENCo learning outcomes can use the award to meet the UK mandatory requirements. It may also be relevant for those aspiring to be SENCos or those who wish to pursue accredited professional development in this area.

Completing the course entitles candidates with 60 credits, which can be used towards an MA in SEN and Inclusion.

The programme is taught by experienced senior lecturers from the School of Education’s Centre for Education and Research (CESNER) with expertise in SEND.

Overall course aims

  • Developing inclusive teaching approaches and co-ordinating provision for pupils with SEN and/or disabilities in their schools

  • Applying methods to identify additional needs and monitor the progress of pupils with SEN and/or disabilities

  • Examining theories of learning and pedagogy in order to raise the achievement of pupils with SEN and/or disabilities

  • Instigating evidence-based, strategic approaches when deploying, supporting and managing other teaching and support staff

  • Establishing networks and partnerships with other SENCos and local advisors

The programme includes:

  • Two modules each worth 30 Level 7 credits at Master’s Level

  • Face-to-face taught sessions (6 days in total spread across the academic year 2014-2015)

  • Online support – blended learning, discussion groups, networking

  • Access to university support and services

  • Mentor support
